The 1990s was a great time to review restaurants in Nashville as the landscape changed from mom-and-pops to chains to trailblazing independents. Here are a handful of reviews penned by a young, sassy and critical me. The selection is limited to the short period that the paper was digital and files were archived properly.

  • Apples in the Field (March 5, 1997) Excellent food in a hotel dining room
  • Ali-Baba (Aug. 8, 1997) Outstanding Persian food, one of many local ethnic treasures
  • Belle Meade Brasserie (March 14, 1997) A look back at a time when a $16 entree was a little steep
  • Big River Grille (Feb. 5, 1997) Keeps on rolling, whatever the critics may say
  • Café 123 (May 9, 1997) The last in a long and successful line of restaurants run by Jody Faison, the accidental restaurateur
  • Café Bambino (Sept. 26, 1997) Beloved family-friendly spot
  • Cakewalk-Zola (Dec. 19, 1997) A brilliant independent restaurant run by a gifted cook. Closed in 2010.
  • Canyon Café (Nov. 7, 1997) One of many Southwestern eateries in Nashville in the 1990s
  • Capitol Grille (June 13, 1997) As reliable for a superb meal then as it is today
  • Chopstick Inn (July 4, 1997) Another visit in a critic’s (and the city’s) ongoing quest for real Chinese food
  • Dancing Bear (Sept. 5, 1997) Hippie surrounds and earnest eats.
  • NASCAR Café (Nov. 28, 1997). I think I might have left tire tracks on the place
